Presented by the Trap Door Theater in English translation, Joan and the Fire by Romanian-French playwright Matéi Visniec examines the way in which history is constantly being rewritten to better serve those in power. When a group of performers staging their take on the myth of Joan of Arc are met by the myth herself, it becomes a battle of epic proportions to save history as Joan and the players each fight to tell their version of the story.

Joan and the Fire’s director Nicole Wiesner discuss the importance of Matéi Visniec work as well as what’s really “burning at the stake” in this staging of his work. With sample performances from cast members.

More about Matéi Vişniec:
Matéi Vişniec is a Romanian-French playwright, poet and journalist, internationally known for his French playwritings. One of his most famous works, Old Clown Wanted, has been performed in France, Germany, United States, and many more countries. In 2009, his play The Word Progress On My Mother’s Lips Doesn’t Ring True was the winner of the “Best Play in the Off-section” at the Avignon Festival. Most recently, by a decree signed by French President Emmanuel Macron, Matei Vişniec became a Knight of the National Order of Merit.

Présenté par le Trap Door Theater, Jeanne et le feu (en traduction anglaise) du dramaturge franco-roumain Matéi Visniec examine la manière dont l’histoire est constamment réécrite pour mieux servir ceux qui sont au pouvoir. Lorsqu’un groupe d’artistes mettant en scène leur version du mythe de Jeanne d’Arc rencontre le mythe en personne, cela entraîne une bataille épique afin de sauver l’histoire. Jeanne et les acteurs se battent alors pour raconter leur version de l’histoire.

Matéi Visniec est un dramaturge, poète et journaliste franco-roumain, internationalement connu pour ses pièces de théâtre françaises. L’une de ses œuvres les plus célèbres,_ Old Clown Wanted_, a été jouée en France, en Allemagne, aux États-Unis et dans de nombreux autres pays. En 2009, sa pièce_ Le mot progrès sur les lèvres de ma mère ne sonne pas vrai a remporté le prix de la « Meilleure pièce en section off » au Festival d’Avignon en 2009. Plus récemment, par un décret signé par le Président français Emmanuel Macron, Matei Vişniec est devenu Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mérite.
