A documentary film by Ayana O’Shun, Le Mythe de la femme noire / The Myth of the Black Woman investigates the image of black women in society, from the hypersexual Jezebel to the lovable Nanny to the sassy “Bitch.” Experts say the Black community is the minority most affected by images created centuries ago. Black women, acclaimed leaders in their fields, tell of the challenges these representations of them bring to their lives. Their compelling stories are supported by compelling, never-before-seen archival footage from centuries past to the present.

Relevant, dynamic and daring, this film gives voice, without compromise. Its classic and very effective form seduces by its asserted speech, the sensual beauty of the images, the intelligence of the testimonies and the delicacy of its musical framework. A powerful tool for popular education and mobilization.

Born in Montreal, Ayana O’Shun (AKA Tetchena Bellange) is a graduate in Cinema from the University of Montreal. She worked for several years at Telefilm Canada in the television department as an investment analyst. She has developed and produced various projects, such as Les Mains noires – Procès de l’esclave incendiaire, which was financed by ICI Radio-Canada, RDI, SODEC and the NFB. Directed by Ayana, the documentary was selected in more than 40 national and international festivals.

Ayana continues directing with the short fiction film Lazyboy. Ayana has also directed several short films such as the NFB documentary Médecins sans résidence. In addition, Ayana is one of the creators selected across Canada for the “Netflix Diversity of Voices” program.

Ayana recently received financial support from Telefilm Canada and the Rogers Fund for the production of her feature-length documentary film Le Mythe de la femme noire (2022). Ayana is also an actress who has appeared in some 40 productions in film, television, theater and advertising. Whether behind or in front of the camera, this artist’s goal is to create powerful stories that promote connection between people and peoples, while breaking down barriers of gender or race, through identification with the experiences of the characters. Freedom, truth, respect and brotherhood are among the fundamental values that underlie all of her work.

Le Mythe de la femme noire est un long-métrage documentaire qui enquête sur l’image des femmes noires dans la société, de l’hypersexuelle Jézabel à l’aimable Nounou, en passant par l’insolente « Bitch ». Selon des spécialistes, la communauté noire est la minorité la plus touchée par des images créées il y a des siècles. Des femmes noires, leaders acclamées dans leur domaine, racontent les défis que ces représentations d’elles entraînent dans leurs vies. Leurs histoires passionnantes sont appuyées par des images d’archives inédites et fascinantes allant des siècles passés jusqu’à nos jours.

Née à Montréal, Ayana O’Shun se destine d’abord à devenir médecin. Alors qu’elle étudie les sciences, elle découvre sa vocation à travers un cours optionnel sur le cinéma. Elle a étudié le cinéma à l’université de Montréal.

Elle a joué notamment avec Dennis Quaid dans The Day After Tomorrow, avec l’acteur Terrence Howard dans le film Sur la route de Walter Salles, dans la comédie à succès Les 3 P’tits Cochons 2 et dans La Chute de l’empire américain de Denys Arcand. En 2018, elle joue une femme qui subit un harcèlement sexuel dans le film dramatique Cassy de Noël Mitrani.

En 2018, elle joue au théâtre, une infirmière très pieuse, dans la comédie dramatique Le dernier sacrement, mis en scène par Denis Bouchard.

Ayana O’Shun est aussi réalisatrice de documentaires. Son documentaire Les Mains noires, au sujet d’une esclave nommée Angélique accusée d’avoir incendié une partie de Montréal en 1734, a été présenté dans une trentaine de festivals et a rencontré un succès médiatique. En février 2023, elle signe son 2e documentaire, Le Mythe de la femme noire. 

Ayana parle couramment le français, l’anglais, le créole et le portugais.
