Introduction to Literary Translation (FR > ENG)
Join this inclusive and collaborative 6-week workshop to deepen your linguistic and cultural understanding of the French language, to invigorate your relationship with the English language, and to sharpen your writing skills. Students will read and discuss both practical and theoretical texts about the craft of translation, and explore a variety of glittering French literary texts that pose different challenges (or opportunities!) in translation, such as cultural references and idioms; jokes, wordplay, and metaphors; the inclusion of various dialects or regional slang; period-specific dialogue; and more. Each week, participants will take home a short excerpt to translate from French to English. We will then discuss and workshop our translations together in class. Each session will include in-class writing warm ups and activities, building a safe space for us to play with language and to explore the tension between freedom and constraint in relation to the task of translation. We will also discuss and think critically about audience, adaptation, research, and the role and responsibility of the translator.
