Magnificent jewelry from
Van Cleef & Arpels
The prestigious jewelry house of Van Cleef & Arpels was founded and opened its shop in the Place Vendôme, Paris, in 1906, where it remains today. The Magic Alhambra collection was launched in 1974, when it reflected the pop culture of the 70’s.
The items offered here are from the Vintage Alhambra Collection, consisting of the famous four leaf clover, made of soft, yet brilliant, white mother-of-pearl, and outlined by a fine beaded band of yellow gold. How elegant you will look in your matching set. First, a Woman’s Alhambra Vintage Watch, with its yellow gold case and white mother-of-pearl dial, enhanced by a black satin strap which will embellish any woman’s wrist. Its Swiss quartz movement ensures the rotation of the 2 polished and brushed Dauphine hands. A lithograph by Raoul Dufy (1877–1953)
Voiliers et Steamers, circa 1925 (Sailboats and Steamships)
Raoul Dufy is one of France’s major 20th Century artists. Dufy, together with Derain, Matisse and Vlaminck, founded the Fauve movement (1904–1907). Dufy also is a major figure in the history of lithography (based on the simple principle that ink will adhere to lines drawn with a grease-crayon on a limestone tablet). According to Castleman (Riva Castleman Prints of the Twentieth Century: A History, Museum of Modern Art, New York:, 1975: p. 95), Dufy’s lithographs of the 1920s “…share with Matisse’s work of the period a quick-sketch quality primarily achieved by the deft management of the lithographic crayon…”.
Voiliers et Steamers, by Raoul Dufy, circa 1925, presented at the Gala, has the following specifications:
Lithograph on strong, white vélin paper: number 24 from an edition of 30
374 x 508 mm; 14 ¾ x 20 inches
Signed and numbered
Provenance: Baron Henri M. Petiet, Paris
Petiet’s acquisition in circa 1942 from the estate of Ambroise Vollard of Picasso’s entire Suite Vollard group of 100 etchings made Petiet the single most important print dealer of the 20th century. The collector’s mark of Henri Petiet (HMP) is the most prestigious 20th century French collector’s mark. It is the mark on the verso of this extremely rare and major lithograph by Raoul Dufy.
This picture is undoubtedly an item for the discerning collector of French Modern Art.
