Alliance Française, please enter at 54 West Chicago Avenue
The French Decorative Arts Symposium, presented by the Alliance Française de Chicago each spring, is a three-part, museum-quality lecture series featuring international experts in the decorative arts. Tickets are sold both as a lecture series and as single lectures. Patron tickets (series and single) include lunch with the speaker following each lecture and a tax deductible contribution to the Alliance Française.

In this final lecture of our 2008 decorative arts series, Gloria Groom will examine the influence of "exoticism" - the fascination with cultures outside the prevalent European mainstream - on 19th century paintings, sculpture, and drawings in the collection of The Art Institute of Chicago. Whether they actually traveled there (Delacroix, Girodet, Gauguin, Matisse, for example) or simply read about the "other" in novels and news reports, exoticism provided artists with new subjects and, in many cases, a new way of thinking about art.

Gloria Groom is the David and Mary Winton Green Curator, Medieval and Modern European Painting and Sculpture at The Art Institute of Chicago, and an expert on the late 19th century artist, Edouard Vuillard. A widely respected author and lecturer, she has been involved with the organization and catalogue writing for a number of major loan exhibitions, including last year's highly acclaimed Cézanne to Picasso: Ambroise Vollard, Patron of the Avant-Garde.

Registration is required and space is limited:

$350 Patron Series (three lectures & three luncheons or two luncheons and dinner buffet on April 2)
$125 Patron Ticket (one lecture & one luncheon)
