6:00 P.M. Gathering, 6:30 P.M. Lecture (Patron-Only Event)
Alliance Française, please enter at 54 West Chicago Avenue
The French Decorative Arts Symposium, presented by the Alliance Française de Chicago each spring, is a three-part, museum-quality lecture series featuring international experts in the decorative arts. Tickets are sold both as a lecture series and as single lectures. Patron tickets (series and single) include lunch with the speaker following each lecture - a dinner buffet follows the evening lecture for the April 2 patron-only event - and a tax deductible contribution to the Alliance Française.

In this lead lecture for the series, offered again at 11:30 a.m. on April 3, art historian Alain Gruber will provide a fascinating history of the origins of exoticism in France. He will explain how trade routes, the Silk Road, and explorations in the Middle East, Asia, and Africa contributed to the wide range of exotic styles and genres which have greatly influenced French decorative art and interior decoration.

Alain Gruber is the former director of the ABEGG Foundation and special consultant to Waddesdon Manor, Christie's and Sotheby's. He is the author of several widely acclaimed decorative arts texts, including Tableware and European Decorative Arts. He lectures internationally and leads special art trips abroad for the Alliance Française de Chicago.

Registration is required and space is limited:

$350 Patron Series (three lectures & three luncheons or two luncheons and dinner buffet on April 2)
$125 Patron Ticket (one lecture & one dinner buffet)

The Patron Series is tax-deductible above $200 and the Patron Ticket is tax-deductible above $50. The patron program is a special fundraising project of the Woman's Board of the Alliance Française.

Non-patron tickets are available for the daytime lectures on April 3, May 1, and June 4:

$100 Lecture Series (three lectures)
$45 Lecture Ticket (one lecture)
